PATTY FRANKLIN  mosaics

Welcome to my new Google Blog Spot! I'm hopeful that this tool will be a faster and more effective way to stay in touch and keep you current on various art topics and "TidBits" of mosaic news from my studio, along with anything I think you might find fun, helpful and interesting.  I would love your feedback; you can post comments ,along with your own mosaic TidBits, on my Face book Page

SAMA Conference:  The first big TidBit of news is that SAMA (Society of American Mosaic Artists) will be holding their annual conference in Tacoma, WA on April 10th - 13th, 2013.  Details can be found at:
If you are interested in attending workshops or presentations, you should consider becoming a member.  Membership gives you early access to the schedule, registration and, discounts on conference costs.  (As well as discounts on materials throughout the year).  In addition, there are several opportunities to volunteer before and during the conference.  You can get more information from the local co-chairs:

Basic Mosaic Class Scheduled at Cole Gallery:

I'm scheduled to teach a 3 day class in Edmonds, WA on October 2nd, 9th and 16th from 6pm to 9pm.  The cost is $165, plus $35 for materials.  You can register directly through the Cole Gallery.

A Fun Little Art TidBit
Color Hue Test
How well do you see color?  Here is an on-line test that will assess how well you can organize colors in hue order.  I won't tell you how I scored (I did improve my score by trying it 3 times), but it's interesting - give it a try at Xrite Color Hue Test

August 2012
American Art Collector Magazine:
Check out the latest issue of American Art Collector Magazine and you'll find a nice little TidBit on my mosaics, page 67.

As a result of this article,
I have a new friend AND
"Rhythm and Blues" has a new home.

UPDATE FROM MY STUDIO

"Into The Woods" (my new series of mosaic sculptures) really has become a strange journey into a gnarly forest of materials, 3D construction, glues, color combos and  design.  As many of you know, this is the first time I've attempted to build a substrate from scratch and it has been - well, interesting?  (The most polite word I can think of at the moment).

The surprising part was the discovery;  volumes of info that I needed to analyse and test, the discovery of so much wrong information on-line and in books and, my amazement at how few artists have worked at this smaller scale and, level of detail, in 3D mosaics.  Smaller is always harder and we have a beautiful world full of incredible HUGE mosaic sculptures (mostly outdoors) but, typical me, I've decided to work in the 20" - 26" height range.  Regardless of the delays that this learning curve has caused and, the extra layer of challenge I hadn't planned on, I've now conquered the beast and the first sculpture is well on it's way to completion.  The added benefit of all my pain and suffering is that I'm carefully documenting my process and will be sharing all that I've learned in "Into The Woods - An Adventure Into 3D Mosaics" which will be published in 2013.

Make sure to check back in September for WIP (work in progress) pictures.  Until then...

Happy nipping!
Patty
